SCT-01 Short Span Compression Tester
Introduction
The SCT test (short span compression test) method is specifically designed to evaluate the compressive strength over a minimal span—typically 0.7 mm—offering higher accuracy compared to traditional ring crush or edge crush tests. This method is ideal for testing materials with grammage between 100 g/m² and 400 g/m².
In the SCT-01, a 15 mm wide specimen is clamped between two precision-aligned jaws. As the jaws compress the sample, the instrument captures the maximum force before failure. The resulting value reflects the compressive strength in Newtons or other units such as KN/m or N.m/g, ensuring versatility in data presentation.
This test is highly sensitive to fiber bonding and material uniformity, making it a valuable indicator of paperboard quality—critical for packaging manufacturers aiming for ISO or TAPPI compliance.
Testing Standards
Accurate SCT testing is governed by well-established international standards. The short span compression tester must meet these requirements to ensure credible and comparable results.
ISO 9895
This international standard specifies the method for determining the compressive strength of paper and board using the SCT. It defines the apparatus setup, sample dimensions, and test speed, ensuring consistency across laboratories worldwide.
TAPPI T 826
This North American standard outlines procedures for short-span compressive strength measurement. It is widely used in containerboard and corrugated packaging industries. The tester must comply with this standard to satisfy industry-specific regulatory or contractual obligations.
Other relevant standards include:
-
DIN 54518
-
BS 7325
-
GB/T 2679.10
-
QB/T 2386
Cell Instruments’ SCT-01 supports all these standards, making it adaptable to global testing requirements.
Key Features
The SCT-01 model from Cell Instruments is designed to provide repeatable and operator-independent results. Below are the key features that set it apart:
-
High-Precision Clamping Mechanism: Two jaws with a 30 mm contact length and a controlled clamping force of 2300 ± 500 N ensure secure sample placement.
-
Accurate Test Range: Measures forces from 1–500 N, suitable for a wide range of paperboard types.
-
Customizable Test Speed: 3 ± 0.1 mm/min to align with standard test conditions.
-
Compact & Efficient: Built-in printer and optional RS-232 interface enable direct result reporting and software connectivity.
-
Safety First: Equipped with emergency stop and overload protection systems.
Applications Industries
The short span compression tester is widely used in:
-
Packaging & Carton Manufacturing: Ensuring consistent board strength and preventing box collapse.
-
Paper Mill Quality Control: Evaluating pulp blends and fiber properties.
-
R&D Facilities: Comparing materials and optimizing formulations.
-
Regulatory Testing: Meeting the quality assurance demands of ISO and TAPPI-compliant industries.
Whether you're manufacturing food cartons, pharmaceutical packaging, or industrial containers, SCT testing provides the quantitative data needed for compliance and performance assurance.
